![]() Still, I recommend it, as I like all of Patchett's books and her writing style. It was a lot of violence, and too much for me to rate the book highly. ![]() While I very much liked this book, I was taken aback by the level of violence, both in her husband's early life, and in his family's interactions when she stayed a bit with them in Nebraska. It is there that she learned why he felt the need to suddenly leave Nebraska and leave his past behind. Later, she chose to visit his family in Nebraska. There were many tremendous secrets, some of which were discovered when they visited Sabine. They came to California to learn more of his life after he died. Unknown to Sabine, Parsihal had another life with a mother and sisters in Nebraska. ![]() He married Sabine so there was a clear path for her to inherit their possessions. Making an appearance on the Johnny Carson show was one of the highlights of Parsifal's career. Many historians claim that fighting in the North West Frontier (NWF) during the inter-war period proved to be a training ground for Gurkhas. However, the question remained how can the once renowned imperial soldiers of empire, successfully maintain the Gurkha reputation of a brave, loyal and formidable fighting force of the British Raj, in Second World War? The post WWI legislation primarily assigned the Indian Army, only for ‘the defence of India against external aggression and the maintenance of internal peace and tranquillity.’ As suggested by this legislation, Gurkhas’ remained extremely active for two primary tasks of the Indian Army firstly, as an imperial defence, and secondly as an internal security force. Twenty years later another serious crisis occurred, which saw Gurkhas’ fight in greater numbers than in any other previous campaign in their history. During the First World War (WWI), the Maharaja of Nepal declared that ‘the whole military resources of Nepal are at His Majesty’s disposal, we shall be proud to be of any service, however little it may be.’ Almost two million Gurkhas’ have fought for Britain. ![]() ![]() ![]() (I read both on original publication and still consider the latter in particular among the best comics I've ever read.) When Mazzucchelli spoke to The Comics Journal in 1997 he told interviewer Christopher Brayshaw that he left superhero comics for three reasons: that he was not a violent person, and so had no connection to the fisticuffs aspect of superhero comics (quite a big component of the genre) that the schedule of doing a monthly comic "was starting to drive me nuts" and that the kind of work he liked in other media – film, literature, the performing arts – was very different to the kind of work he himself was doing, in terms of "Subject matter, approach, attitude, everything." ![]() ![]() At the apex of his relatively brief career in superhero comics – he drew his first comic for Marvel, Master of Kung Fu #121, in 1983 and had all but left the genre by 1987 – David Mazzucchelli helped redefine and reshape superhero storytelling with two acknowledged classics, both in collaboration with Frank Miller: Daredevil: Born Again (originally serialized in 1986 in Daredevil #227–233) and Batman: Year One (originally serialized in 1987 in Batman #404–407). ![]() ![]() Incorporating live music and physical theatre, this production is modern, accessible and often humourous as well as dark and affecting.
